Cabin Air Filters and Spring Cleaning

Have you ever opened the hood and encountered this? This is a mouse nest made out of a cabin air filter. Yes, it is frightening to find out something has been living in your car. Here at Elysian Auto Service, we encounter dozens of these scenarios each year, it is common because little critters are always looking for a place to live, and your car offers a couple of great housing amenities They enjoy small spaces, and cabin and engine air filters make the most comfortable bedding imaginable. These little friends will drag things in from all over, and once they get started it does not take long to set up shop and for them to get comfortable.

This situation looks like it's minor, and in most cases it is, but that does not mean it should not be thoroughly investigated. We recommend you have a certified technician conduct an inspection to make sure there is not any other damage. These rodents are infamous for chewing on wires in all areas of the vehicle, and they have been known to create some very serious problems which resulted in extensive repair. Now if your little renters did get into your filters they may have left nests not only on top of your motor but also in places that are not visible so keep that in mind. We recommend replacing the cabin air filter immediately, as mice leave behind droppings and urine. This filter is what cleans the air coming into the cabin, and breathing in mice droppings is not good for your health. When we replace your cabin air filter, we also use BG Frigi-Fresh. Frigi-Fresh is a disinfectant that disinfects and kills harmful bacteria and mold spores found in the A/C system.

Spring is the perfect time to take advantage of the sunshine and do a thorough clean of your vehicle. Vacuum it out, wipe down surfaces, and clean the inside of your windshield. This will help freshen your vehicle up from the winter. Plus, nothing feels better than a freshly cleaned-out vehicle!

Elysian Auto Service also wants to remind you that if your vehicle is parked in the garage that does not mean you are 100% immune to critter problems. Most nests are from cars that are parked outside, but we have seen our share from garage customers as well which can be a head-scratcher. Be on the lookout for the little things, they can fit in the smallest spaces and are very determined!
