Summer Vehicle Maintenance Tips: Elysian Auto Service

Image
Vehicle Maintenance Tips: Summer The season to hit the open road is nearly upon us! Whether you are heading up north to the cabin for the weekend or loading up the family to take that big cross-country vacation. You need to be prepared, and so does your vehicle. Elysian Auto Service has a couple of tips and reminders to make your travels safer and give you peace of mind. Most of these things just take a few minutes but that does not mean they are not important so let us begin.  The first item on the agenda is your tires, check them for low tread, abnormal wear like less tread on the inside or outside of the tire, or incorrect inflation. We know most are not tire experts, but if it looks bad or odd you most likely have a problem. As far as inflation is concerned, on the inside door frame of the driver's side is a sticker with the correct inflation. Be sure to check your spare tire as well! Secondly, how are the fluids? You have coolant, transmission, brake, and power steering fluid ...

Tire Safety 101: Elysian Auto Service

Image
Tire Safety 101 When you think about major components of your vehicle, your first thought might go to your engine. After all, without an engine you cant drive. The same thing can be said about tires! Tires are put through more wear and tear than we realize. They provide traction to help keep us on the road, increase our breaking power, and assist us with handling. Here are a few tips to consider and be aware of to help keep your tires in the best possible condition and last longer; One of the major causes of bad tires or extreme wear is lack of rotation. If you don't rotate you can have uneven wear on the inside or outside of your tire and that can result in bad handling but also the worst-case scenario of a blowout. The best practice to follow is to rotate every 5000 miles. If your tires are low or your tire light comes in it is important to check your pressures. Inside the driver's door, you should see a small sticker on the frame with the correct tire inflation number, fol...

Can I Drive With a Bad Thermostat? -Elysian Auto Service

Image
Can I Drive With a Bad Thermostat? The short answer to this question is technically yes, but the long and smart answer is no. Yes, your car will still run but not very well. Without that thermostat properly working, it decreases performance and can cause damage. Most think a car would immediately overheat without a functioning thermostat and that may be true, but the car may also never warm up to its optimal temperature. Driving with a bad thermostat is a disaster waiting to happen. The thermostat serves an important role in your vehicle, it is basically a valve between the engine and radiator. When the coolant gets hot the thermostat opens letting the coolant pass to the radiator, if it is not hot then the thermostat stays closed allowing the coolant to circulate. Some common signs of a bad thermostat include your engine overheating or a fluctuation of your temperature gauge. If either happens get your vehicle into a certified shop as soon as possible. Overheating your vehicle i...

Elysian Auto Service: How often should you change your transmission fluid?

Image
How often should you change your transmission fluid? The answer to this question leads us to more questions including; what type of vehicle do you drive, who is the vehicle manufacturer, how many miles do you put on, where it is driven, if the vehicle is used for towing, etc. After we have identified what category it falls under we can recommend a fluid service interval that is best for that situation. The first thing that is needed is a fluid sample of your transmission fluid. Our ASE Certified technicians will pull a sample and take a picture so you are able to see it for yourself. Transmission fluid like all other fluids in the vehicle breaks down over time from excessive heat and pressure, once the fluid does break down it cant dissipate heat which can lead to multiple problems. That is why manufacturers recommend this service. A good rule to follow is every 30,000 to 60,000 miles unless you are towing or have a manual transmission which may require more frequency. We know it...

Appointment Reminders and Confirmation Text

Image
Did you know that when you schedule an appointment at Elysian Auto Service that you will receive an appointment reminder via text message? You will receive a message 7 days in advance.  You will also receive a message the night before your appointment.  We know how hectic life can get, and find that this is a great way to give our customers a friendly reminder of their service appointment.  The night before your appointment you will receive a text message reminder, at the bottom of the message it asks for you to reply C to confirm your appointment. This lets us know that your scheduled appointment time still works and that you will be there. If we don’t receive a confirmation we aren’t sure if your appointment time still works or if you will be coming.

Winter Maintenance: Fluids  Winter is right around the corner! Living in Minnesota, it is important to make sure your vehicle's fluids are ready for the cold. A couple particular fluids are very important to ensure your vehicle runs properly. You want to pay close attention to your: -Anti-Freeze/Coolant: Antifreeze ensures that your engine does not freeze up in the winter or overheat in the summer. Some antifreeze comes as a concentrated liquid and some are already pre-diluted. Make sure you pay special attention to which you buy, and that if needed you properly dilute it. We suggest a coolant service every 30,000 miles or 3 years.  -Oil: Make sure your oil change and filter are both up to date. Cold oil has a thicker consistency which puts more pressure on the filter. You want to make sure you have a clean filter, this will ensure that the oil can pass through with minimum resistance.  -Windshield Washer Fluid: Check your windshield fluid level and make sure you h...
