Do Brake Pads And Rotors Need To Be Replaced At The Same Time?

Have you recently started to hear grinding when you press on the brake pedal? Or maybe your brake pedal has started to feel squishy? These are both telltale signs that it is time to have your brakes looked at. To answer the question on brake pads and rotors needing to be replaced at the same time, our answer is yes.

What are brake pads?

Brake pads are flat pieces of steel. On one side they are smooth and on the other side is a thick material that absorbs friction. When you press on your brake pedal, your brake pads make contact with your rotors which slows you and eventually brings you to a stop. Every time you brake, your pad loses a bit of the friction-absorbing material.

What are rotors?

Rotors are a disk that oftentimes can be seen from your wheel well. Rotors are what absorb the high pressure from your brake pads. When you press the brake pedal, your pads make contact with the rotors. Rotors are subject to high heat and pressure constantly.

Why replace brake pads and rotors at the same time?

We sometimes get asked during a brake service if we can just replace the pads and not the rotors. And our answer is no. Replacing just the pads only fixes half of the problem at hand. Rotors, especially on our vehicles here in Minnesota, are prone to rust and sometimes grooving. Our harsh climates and chemicals used on the roads eats away our rotors and cause them to wear and break down quickly. If you put new brake pads on old rotors, your pads will get chewed up and wear prematurely. Replacing the rotors alongside the pads the first time eliminates any headaches that will arise down the road if you weren’t to replace the rotors initially.

Elysian Auto Service is excited to announce that Brakes for Breast officially kicks off in the month of October. (We are starting EARLY this year! September 19th!) This means FREE brake pads. In addition to free pads, 10% of the labor of all brake jobs is donated to Brakes for Breast to help find the cure for breast cancer. If you have any questions regarding Brakes for Breast, please give us a call at 507-267-4435.
